Dr. Botha
Dr Botha is an anterior segment surgeon performing cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery and lid surgery. He has a keen interest in the diagnosis and treatment of uveitis and medical diseases of the retina and vitreous (such as age related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease). Dr Botha attended the International Uveitis Study Group uveitis course in Venice, Italy in 2011 and the European Vitreoretinal Society Summer School in 2015 in Bremen, Germany.
Dr A.F Botha completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2002. He completed his internship at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town in 2003 and his community service at Frere Hospital, East London in 2004. Prior to commencing his specialist training he worked as an ophthalmology senior house officer in the NHS in the UK and held medical officer posts at Sebokeng Hospital, Vereeniging and Leratong Hospital, Krugersdorp. He completed his specialist training at the University of the Witwatersrand between 2007 and 2011 after which he was consultant and head of clinical department ophthalmology at Sebokeng Hospital, Vereeniging. He completed his MMed ophthalmology dissertation in 2012 after studying the clinical features and presentation of herpes zoster ophthalmicus in HIV seropositive patients whilst at St Johns Eye Hospital during his specialist training. He commenced private practise in 2012, consulting at both the Johannesburg Vision Clinic and East Rand Eye Institute. He has surgical privileges at both the Johannesburg Eye Hospital and Ekurhuleni Surgiklin Day Hospital.
